What is Reiki?

Reiki is a relaxation technique that promotes healing. The word Reiki means Universal (Rei) Life Force Energy (Ki). Ki (also known as chi, prana, subtle energy, etc.) is the energy that surrounds and permeates all living things.

We have energy bodies as well as physical bodies. Our aura is an extension of our internal energy system. We need the free-flow of this energy to sustain our organs and tissues for optimal heath. All of our life experiences (including traumatic events, accidents, injury, etc) get stored energetically within. These traumatic events can create energetic blocks which, if left untreated, can affect us mentally, emotionally, or even physically. Reiki works to release these blocks, balance your energetic system, and restore the optimal flow of subtle energy.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is received by the client through the palms of the practitioner’s hands. This is not the practitioner’s energy (as with other hands-on healing modalities). Think of the practitioner as an electric cord. The cord doesn’t manufacture or produce the energy; it just carries it from one place to another. The client also only takes in the energy that is needed, so they never receive “too much” energy.

What is a Reiki session like?

When you arrive we will have a quick chat about the intention of your session and answer any questions you may have. During the session, you will be laying on a massage table (or in a chair) fully clothed. I will then go through a series of hand positions with very light touch (or no touch at all if you prefer) from head to toe, avoiding private areas and any other areas that are agreed upon prior to the session. Each hand position is usually held for between three and five minutes before moving to the next hand position, unless more time is needed in a specific area. Most clients feel a warmth, coolness, and/or a tingling feeling. Some may feel nothing at all. Everyone is different. You also may perceive vivid colors, random thoughts, or you may just experience stillness. However, there always seems to be a common denominator, and that is that you will leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. Many clients have mentioned that it feels like a massage from the inside out.
